Worth knowing

  • There is no passenger rail network on the island; buses connect the main towns, but a car is the practical way to reach Troodos and the west coast's quieter corners.
  • The east coast resorts and the west coast sit a couple of hours apart by road, so combining both sides properly needs more than a long weekend.
  • Nicosia is the one base here without a beach, which makes it a poor fit for a trip built purely around the coast.

How Cyprus’s own destinations differ, and who each tends to suit.

  • Ayia NapaThe island's busiest resort, built around Nissi Beach and a concentrated strip of clubs and bars. Suits a younger, nightlife-first trip.
  • ProtarasA quieter alternative to Ayia Napa a short drive along the same coast, with Fig Tree Bay and a more family-oriented pace.
  • LarnacaA seafront town with a palm-lined promenade, the church of Agios Lazaros and a salt lake where flamingos stay from November to March; intercity buses link it with Nicosia, Limassol and Ayia Napa.
  • LimassolA real working city as well as a resort, with a long seafront promenade. A better base than the east coast if you want a city around your beach time.
  • PaphosHarbour town with ancient sites within walking distance of the centre, and a slower, more couples- and history-led pace than the east coast resorts.
  • LatchiA small harbour village at the edge of the Akamas peninsula, used more as a base for boat trips and coastal walking than for its own sights.
  • PolisNeighbours Latchi and shares its quiet, undeveloped feel, close to the Baths of Aphrodite and the start of the Akamas trails.
  • TroodosMountain villages well above the coast, cool in summer and cold enough for snow in winter. Wine villages, hiking trails and a genuinely different climate from the beach towns below.
  • NicosiaThe inland capital, still divided by a UN buffer zone. The least beach-like base on the island, and the one with the most everyday Cypriot life rather than resort life.

  • The east coastAyia Napa and Protaras: the island's main sandy-beach resorts, built around clubs and family hotels rather than sightseeing.
  • Limassol and the south coastThe biggest city on the island, with a working port and marina alongside its beaches. A base for exploring rather than a single sight.
  • The west coastPaphos, Latchi and Polis: quieter and more spread out than the east, with ancient sites, a harbour-town feel and the Akamas peninsula's coastline within reach.
  • Inland and the Troodos mountainsNicosia and the Troodos villages: the capital and the hills above the coast, both a genuinely different trip from the beach resorts.

When to go

Spring
Warm and green before the summer heat sets in, and a good window for Troodos and inland walking.
Summer
Hot and dry for months on end, especially on the coast; Troodos stays noticeably cooler than the resorts below it.
Autumn
The sea is at its warmest and the crowds thin out through September and into October.
Winter
Mild on the coast and genuinely cold in Troodos, which sees occasional snow. Many resort hotels and seasonal businesses scale back.

Cyprus has no passenger railway, so buses and taxis cover the coastal towns while a hire car is the practical way to reach Troodos and the quieter western coastline. The island is small enough that most of it sits within a couple of hours' drive of anywhere else on it.
