When to go

Spring
Snow retreats through April and May, and Oslo's forest trails and fjord-side paths reopen well before the water is warm enough to swim in.
Summer
Long, mild days with light lasting into the late evening, and the fjord becomes part of the city itself — swimming, island ferries and waterfront bars all in use.
Autumn
Crisp and colourful through September and October as the surrounding forest turns, with day length dropping fast by November.
Winter
Daylight shrinks to only a few hours by December, sun up around 9am and down by mid-afternoon, but Oslo turns this into its defining season rather than something to endure: the forest above the city becomes a genuine cross-country ski network, reachable by metro from the centre when snow allows.

Getting around

Oslo Airport is well outside the city, but Flytoget's express train covers the run to Oslo Central Station in around 20 minutes, and slower Vy regional and local trains also stop at the airport for less money. Central Oslo itself is compact and well served by trams, the metro and buses, so a car adds little inside the city.
