When to go

Spring
Snow retreats through April and May and days lengthen fast, though weather stays changeable and some highland routes remain closed.
Summer
Iceland's mildest, busiest season, with near round-the-clock daylight around the solstice and the highland F-roads typically open for the only time all year.
Autumn
Days shorten quickly through September and October, and the northern lights become visible again once the sky is dark enough.
Winter
The shortest days of the year here by a clear margin: only a handful of hours of low, grey light around the solstice, sunrise well past 11am. Reykjavik answers with geothermal pools and hot tubs that feel better in the cold, and dark skies that make the northern lights visible from the city itself on a clear night. Weather is the real constraint beyond the capital — wind and storms can close roads and cancel tours with little notice, and the highland interior shuts for the season.

Getting around

Keflavík International Airport is well outside Reykjavik, with no rail link at all — Flybus and other coach transfers cover the run, and most visitors either book a transfer or collect a rental car at the terminal. Inside Reykjavik the centre is small and walkable, but a car or organised tour becomes the practical way to reach the Golden Circle, South Coast or anywhere beyond the city.
