When to go

Spring: Snow clears through April and May and days lengthen fast, with parks and outdoor cafés reopening before the sea has properly warmed up.
Summer: Only a few hours of dim twilight rather than real darkness around midsummer, and Helsinki is at its most outdoor: island ferries run full timetables, and the city empties slightly as locals head to summer cottages.
Autumn: Days shorten quickly through September and October, with the archipelago ferry schedule thinning out as the season ends.
Winter: The sea can freeze at the city's edges and daylight falls to only a few hours by December, sun up well after 9am and gone by mid-afternoon. Helsinki doesn't slow down for it: sauna culture is at its most essential this time of year, and museums and design shops carry the day.
