When to go

Spring
Mild and increasingly pleasant through April and May, with parks and outdoor dining reopening before the summer crowds and heat arrive.
Summer
Hot and humid, especially July and August, with the city's parks, rooftops and waterfronts all in heavy use.
Autumn
Widely considered the strongest season: crisp, mild days, easier hotel prices than summer, and the foliage in the larger parks turning through October.
Winter
Genuinely cold, with snow a real possibility from December onward. Fifth Avenue's window displays and the season's ice rinks lean into it, but pack for real winter weather, not just a chill.

Getting around

New York is served by three airports rather than one, all operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and each connects to the city differently. JFK's AirTrain reaches the subway at Howard Beach and the subway plus Long Island Rail Road at Jamaica. Newark's AirTrain connects to NJ Transit and Amtrak trains into Manhattan. LaGuardia has no direct rail link at all, relying instead on a free shuttle bus to the subway and LIRR in Queens. Once in the city, the subway runs 24 hours and is the practical way to get around; traffic makes driving genuinely slower for most cross-town journeys.
