When to go

Spring
Mild and green, with the sea still cool for swimming. Good timing for Plitvice Lakes and inland travel before the coastal crowds arrive.
Summer
Hot, dry and by far the busiest months. Book accommodation and ferries well ahead, especially for Dubrovnik and Hvar.
Autumn
Warm sea, thinner crowds and lower prices through September. Many regulars' preferred month.
Winter
Quiet and mild on the coast, cold inland. Many island ferries and seasonal businesses scale right back.

Getting around

The coast is long and mountainous rather than fast to drive. Ferries link the islands to the mainland and to each other, and long-distance coaches run the length of the coastal highway. A car earns its keep in Istria and inland, but is more of a hindrance than a help for island-hopping.
