"Winter sun" over Christmas from the UK means mild rather than hot — December across Tenerife, Cyprus and Madeira runs from the high teens to low twenties Celsius by day, not beach weather, but it is a genuine step up from a UK December. Only one of these four has a confirmed festive-period event; the rest are a climate case, not an event-led one.
What's actually confirmed for the festive period
Neither Funchal's Christmas Day programme nor a specific 24–26 December event schedule has been published yet — the tourism board's own events page does not yet carry the 2026 dates. What is confirmed, and confirmed at government level, is New Year: a fireworks display over Funchal bay from 59 launch sites, approved by the Madeira Regional Government, timed for the stroke of midnight on 31 December. So the honest way to plan a Funchal trip this year is around New Year, not around an as-yet-unpublished Christmas programme.
Cyprus (Larnaca and Paphos) and Tenerife have no equivalent confirmed festive event to point to — their case for a December trip is climate and an ordinary, low-key Mediterranean or Canarian Christmas, not a headline show. Say so plainly rather than implying otherwise: none of the three has a festive programme published for 2026.

Booking timing
- Both the Christmas week and New Year week are peak dates on these routes — fares and stays are priced accordingly, and availability on the exact days either side of 25 December or 31 December tightens first.
