"Winter sun" over Christmas from the UK means mild rather than hot. December across Tenerife, Cyprus and Madeira runs from the high teens to low twenties Celsius by day, not beach weather, but it is a clear step up from a UK December. Only one of these four has a confirmed festive-period event; the rest are a climate case, not an event-led one.
What's confirmed for the festive period
Neither Funchal's Christmas Day programme nor a specific 24–26 December event schedule has been published yet — the tourism board's own events page does not yet carry the 2026 dates. What is confirmed, and confirmed at government level, is New Year: a fireworks display over Funchal bay from 59 launch sites, approved by the Madeira Regional Government, timed for the stroke of midnight on 31 December. So the sensible way to plan a Funchal trip this year is around New Year, not around an as-yet-unpublished Christmas programme.
Tenerife has no equivalent confirmed festive event to point to, and Cyprus has only the Deputy Ministry of Tourism's Christmas villages season, officially 21 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, mostly in hill villages away from the Larnaca and Paphos coast, with no village programme we could see. Their case for a December trip is climate and an ordinary, low-key Mediterranean or Canarian Christmas, not a headline show. None of the three has a festive programme we could confirm for 2026.

These are multi-year historical averages, not a standard 30-year climate normal or a forecast, and not a promise about this specific December's dates: read them as "what December is usually like" for each place. Tenerife is both the warmest and the driest of the four; Paphos and Funchal, despite being cooler, see more December rain than either Cyprus airport city or Tenerife on the daily-high measure alone. Booking timing
- Both the Christmas week and New Year week are peak dates on these routes: fares and stays are priced accordingly, and availability on the exact days either side of 25 December or 31 December tightens first.
- Flying a day or two either side of the peak date, rather than on it, is usually the easiest way to keep more flight and room choice without giving up much of the trip.
