New Year's Eve city breaks 2026–27, from the UK

New Year 2026 falls on a Thursday, so the natural shape is Wednesday 30 December to Saturday 2 January or a day either side of it. Only a few of this season's European destinations have actually confirmed what happens on the night itself — the rest are still a normal city break that happens to fall over New Year.

  • Salzburg

    A 30 December to 2 January stay covers both the market's New Year hours and its final day on 1 January. This is a quiet, walkable old-town New Year rather than a big public countdown — pick it if a crowd is not the point.

    The longest flight on this list, so arrive a couple of days early rather than flying in on the 31st itself. Flights, closures and stays over the turn of the year

  • Flying on 31 December or 1 January itself is usually the cheapest way to fly across the period, but schedules thin out on the day — flying in on the 30th and out on the 2nd or 3rd gives more choice of time.
  • 1 January is a public holiday almost everywhere on this list: expect reduced opening hours for shops, museums and some transport, and plan the day around walking and viewpoints rather than a fixed itinerary.
  • Accommodation over New Year routinely carries a minimum-stay requirement and its own peak pricing, separate from the rest of December — book the room before the flight if the dates are fixed.

For a quieter alternative that skips the New Year premium entirely, Vienna and Budapest are both genuinely good city breaks over this period — there is simply nothing organised to plan the night itself around yet.
