Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday, so the natural shape is Wednesday 23 December to Sunday 27 December, or a day either side. This is a different question from the pre-Christmas market weekend (most markets are already closing by the 23rd) and from a winter-sun trip (chosen for warmth, not festive streets): this is about which destinations genuinely keep running through the 24th, 25th and 26th themselves, and which mostly close for the holiday.

What actually stays open over 24-26 December

A market's advertised season and its behaviour on Christmas Day itself are two different facts, and only the second one matters for a stay over the 24th to the 26th. Plenty of Christmas markets run from late November into early January on paper, but shorten their hours, or close outright, for a day or two around the 24th and 25th. A smaller number publish exactly what happens on those specific days, and a few simply keep going as an ordinary town or city regardless of any market at all. Treat the two as separate questions: is the season still running in date-range terms, and does anything actually confirm opening hours for the 24th, 25th and 26th specifically.

Shop and restaurant hours on 25 December itself are a separate matter and worth checking locally rather than assuming.
CopenhagenPartially confirmedTivoli Gardens' Christmas season runs 13 November to 3 January — a range that fully covers the 24th to the 26th — but neither Tivoli's own site nor VisitCopenhagen states opening hours for those three days specifically. Treat Tivoli as open across the season, not confirmed day-by-day the way Salzburg is.
LarnacaNo market to open or closeLarnaca has no Christmas market at all, so there is nothing to confirm or contradict — the town runs its ordinary December self through the 24th to the 26th. None of this rules other cities out — it only reflects which official sources actually state something about the 24th to 26th, as opposed to a season-long date range that may or may not hold on those specific days. A market with no line above simply has not published one either way.

  • Vienna

    The most variety of any destination here for a Christmas Day itself: four central markets keep running through the 24th to the 26th, and Schönbrunn carries on for another fortnight beyond that. A good base is Landstraße or Leopoldstadt, both a short tram or S-Bahn ride from the markets that stay open, rather than Innere Stadt prices for a stay this long.

    For travellers who want a fixed answer rather than a general date range, Salzburg is the clearest case on this page — the organiser publishes hour-by-hour opening times for the 24th, 25th and 26th. The whole market sits in Altstadt, so basing yourself there or in neighbouring Nonntal keeps the walk to a few minutes.

    Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square are both scheduled to stay open across the 24th to the 26th as part of one continuous run, so there is no risk of arriving to a closed square mid-stay. Malá Strana is the quieter base if the crowds around Old Town itself feel like too much for four nights.

    A different kind of Christmas from the market cities above: Tivoli Gardens is lit for the season from 13 November to 3 January, and Indre By around it is compact enough to cover on foot even with the shorter winter daylight. Do not assume it is open on the 24th to 26th themselves: no source publishes hours for those three days yet, and holiday closures or short days are common for attractions on Christmas Eve — check Tivoli’s own calendar before building Christmas Day around it.

    The honest alternative to all four cities above: Larnaca has no market season to check hours for, so nothing about the 24th to 26th is confirmed or unconfirmed — the town simply runs as normal. Getting there and a 4-night outline

  • Flying out on 23 or 24 December and back on 27 or 28 December keeps both the outbound and return journey clear of Christmas Day itself, when schedules on some routes thin out.
  • Transport within a destination — trams, buses, the local metro — commonly runs a reduced or holiday timetable on 25 December specifically; none of the sources above states an exact reduced schedule, so treat this as the general pattern rather than a confirmed timetable, and check the local operator once dates are booked.
  • A straightforward shape for this trip is four nights, 23-27 December: arrive the afternoon or evening of the 23rd, two full days either side of Christmas Day itself, and a travel day home on the 27th rather than the 25th or 26th.
  • Accommodation over Christmas week carries its own premium, separate from the rest of December — book the room as early as the flight, and compare stays for your exact dates on the destination page rather than assuming December pricing throughout is the same.
