Christmas market weekend breaks 2026, from the UK

Four weekends between late November and 20 December 2026 work for a UK market break, and which city fits depends on the weekend: Prague doesn't open until 28 November, so its markets miss the first of those weekends, while Vienna, Salzburg and Riga are open across all four.

The four pre-Christmas weekends

Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, which pushes the last sensible market weekend back to 18–20 December — any later and you are travelling on Christmas week itself. That leaves four Friday-to-Sunday weekends, and not every market is open for all of them.

Budapest's two main markets (Vörösmarty tér and the Advent Bazilika at St Stephen's Basilica) have not published 2026 dates as of this writing, so it is left off every weekend above rather than guessed at. Kraków's Main Square fair is missing from this list for the same reason: no 2026/27 dates are published on the city's own tourism site as of writing, though the market is a longstanding annual fixture that traditionally opens in the second half of November — treat any specific date quoted elsewhere as a guess, not a confirmation. Tallinn's own market site gives a closing date of 28 December, while the national tourist board's page says 6 January — the two sources disagree, so treat Tallinn's exact run as unconfirmed even though its opening in late November is solid.

  • Salzburg

    For a short two-night trip, Salzburg is one market in one connected set of squares in front of the cathedral — no route-planning between neighbourhoods, and its organiser publishes exact opening hours months ahead, including 24–26 December, so a compact weekend doesn't run any risk of arriving to a closed stall.

  • Vienna

    For three nights with a proper day trip built in, Vienna spreads a dozen markets across the city on different calendars — six close on 23 December, four more on 26 December, and only Schönbrunn and the Prater winter market run on to 6 January — so a longer stay is rewarded with real variety rather than repeating the same square.

  • Riga

    Riga's Dome Square market draws a fraction of the crowds Vienna or Prague see and sits inside a compact, walkable old town. The market has not published a closing date for this season, so treat any later weekend as opportunistic rather than guaranteed, and book the earlier weekends above with more confidence than the later ones.

  • Copenhagen

    A different kind of pre-Christmas trip: Tivoli Gardens' Christmas season runs 13 November to 3 January, one confirmed date range covering every weekend on the table above, so there is no risk of arriving before it opens the way there is with Prague or Vilnius.

  • Vilnius

    Vilnius's Cathedral Square Christmas market runs 28 November to 27 December 2026, confirmed by the city's own festive-programme site — one of the few markets here with a genuinely fixed closing date rather than an open-ended run into January, and a smaller, quieter old town than Prague or Vienna.

Crowds, cold and getting there

  • Saturdays are the busiest day at every market on this list; a Friday evening or Sunday morning visit is markedly quieter for the same trip.
  • All of these are outdoor markets in northern or central Europe — layers, waterproof footwear and gloves matter more than what the destination page says about summer.
  • Vienna, Salzburg and Copenhagen fly from LHR, LGW, STN and MAN; Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius have thinner UK coverage, so check search for your specific weekend before booking accommodation.
