Choose the base first. Paphos suits ancient sites with the sea beside them, Limassol a working city with a long seafront, Nicosia urban history in an inland capital, and Troodos mountain villages in the hill country where most of the Christmas villages are. December is mild on the coast and cold in the hills, and the Department of Antiquities' museums and archaeological sites close on 25 December, so the order of your days matters more than how many you have.
Pick the base: coast, city or mountains
| Base | Best for | Christmas villages | December, monthly climate averages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paphos | Ancient sites with the sea beside them: Nea Paphos and the Tombs of the Kings are both in Kato Paphos. No rail; buses, taxis or a car | Statos-Agios Fotios, in the Pafos Mountains | Average daily high 19°C, 120mm of rain |
| Limassol | A working city with a long seafront and an old town; Kourion is 19 km to the west. Buses and taxis, no train or metro | Lofou, 26 km from Limassol town; Agros and Kyperounta, in the Limassol district hills (in the Troodos range) | Average daily high 19°C, 91mm of rain |
| Nicosia | Urban history and everyday Cypriot life in the inland capital, with no beach. Buses, no train, metro or tram | Fikardou, in Nicosia district, and Kakopetria, south-west of the city | Average daily high 18°C, 50mm of rain |
| Troodos | Mountain villages and forest walks, in cold weather. A car is often necessary: public transport to the villages is limited | Kalopanagiotis, in the Marathasa valley; Kakopetria and Fikardou on the Troodos foothills and slope | Average daily high 9°C, 47mm of rain |
The December figures are multi-year historical averages, not a standard 30-year climate normal or a forecast: read them as what December is usually like, not a forecast for 24 to 26 December 2026. Paphos has the wettest December of the four on these figures, and Troodos is the only one with a daily high in single figures.
Ayia Napa, Protaras, Latchi and Polis are left out as Christmas bases. Our Ayia Napa, Protaras and Latchi pages say much of their winter infrastructure closes or scales back, and Polis is described as a quiet residential centre in winter. Larnaca is where many trips start; it is covered below as the arrival point.
What is shut on 24, 25 and 26 December
Visit Cyprus lists 24, 25 and 26 December as public holidays, and says that all public services, private enterprises, banks and shops are closed on public holidays, although many shops and certain services stay open in resorts and coastal areas. The same page says banks are not closed on Christmas Eve, and shops must be closed by 18:00 that day. The exception it names for the holidays themselves is resorts and coastal areas, so on an inland base ask your accommodation what will be open.
For museums and archaeological sites, the Department of Antiquities publishes a public-holiday table. It closes every museum, monument and archaeological site on 25 December and 1 January, and gives hours for 24 and 26 December. Its Tombs of the Kings page refers visitors to its home page for public-holiday hours, so that is the official channel.
| Place | 24 December | 25 December | 26 December |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paphos: Nea Paphos mosaics and Tombs of the Kings | 8:30 to 17:00 | Closed | 8:30 to 17:00 |
| Paphos: District Archaeological Museum | Closed | Closed | Closed |
| Limassol area: Kourion and Kolossi Castle | 8:30 to 17:00 | Closed | 8:30 to 17:00 |
| Limassol: District Archaeological Museum and Limassol Castle (medieval museum) | Closed | Closed | Closed |
| Nicosia: Cyprus Museum | 10:00 to 13:00 | Closed | 10:00 to 13:00 |
| Nicosia: Ethnological Museum (House of Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios) | Closed | Closed | Closed |
| Fikardou: local ethnological museum | Closed | Closed | Closed |
| Lefkara: local ethnological museum | Closed | Closed | Closed |
The table is not dated for 2026, and the department says a press release follows any last-minute change, so read it as the usual pattern and confirm before you go. It covers the department's own sites only: no hours are given here for any private attraction, tour, monastery, village programme or restaurant, because none was found. 6 January, the last day of the Christmas villages season, is also a public holiday.
The Christmas villages season

The Deputy Ministry of Tourism's Christmas Villages page names nine villages and towns and says the Christmas Villages operate from 21 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 inclusive. It describes cultural events, stands with local products and handicrafts, gastronomy and crafting workshops, guided village tours, and local restaurants and hotels with holiday menus.
| Village | Where, from its official page |
|---|---|
| Agros | Pitsilia region, Limassol district (in the Troodos range), at 1,100 m |
| Kyperounta | Pitsilia region, Limassol district (in the Troodos range), at about 1,300 m |
| Lofou | Limassol district, at 780 m, 26 km from Limassol town |
| Fikardou | Nicosia district, at 900 m on the south-eastern slope of Troodos; vehicles are not allowed to enter the village |
| Kakopetria | South-west of Nicosia at 670 m, on the foothills of the Troodos Mountains |
| Kalopanagiotis | The Marathasa valley, in the Troodos mountain range |
| Statos-Agios Fotios | The Pafos Mountains, at 950 m |
| Lefkara | South-eastern foot of the Troodos Mountains, 650 m, 43 km from Larnaca |
| Deryneia | Famagusta district, one of the Kokkinochoria red-soil villages |
Eight of the nine are in hill country, so the season mostly rewards a hill base or a day out uphill from the coast. We have not confirmed drive times, and only Lofou (26 km from Limassol town) and Lefkara (43 km from Larnaca) have a distance from a coastal town on their official pages.
When we checked on 15 October 2026, each village page told visitors to follow a "click here" line for its programme, and that line carried no link, so we have not seen any village's day-by-day programme. The season dates are the official overview. Whether a given village is open on 24, 25 or 26 December, and at what hours, is for that village to confirm: ask the village (seven of the nine pages give a contact number) before you build a day around it.
Coast or mountains: what December weather means for the plan
- Coast (Paphos, Limassol). Visit Cyprus describes winters as mild, with an average of six hours of bright sunshine a day even in December and January. The figures above put the daily high at about 19°C with the most rain of the four in Paphos, so pack a waterproof.
- Nicosia. Inland, with a daily high near 18°C on the figures above. Our Nicosia page says shorter daylight and occasional rain make long outdoor days less appealing than on the coast, so plan indoor hours and short walks in the old streets.
- Troodos. Visit Cyprus gives rain and snow on the Troodos Mountains in winter, and an indicative January daily temperature of 3°C on the higher parts, against 10°C on the central plain. Snow is possible, not promised: do not book around it. Our Troodos page says the ski centre usually runs from the start of January, snow permitting, so Christmas week itself is a walking and villages trip.
- The sea. Visit Cyprus gives average sea temperatures of 16 or 17°C for January to March and has no December figure we could find, so do not build the trip around swimming.
Four- and seven-night shapes
These are ways to spend the nights, not timetables: flight times and what is available on your dates come from the search results, not from this guide. Where 25 December falls in your trip, give it the day that does not need an open museum.
- 4 nights in Paphos. One base. Put the Tombs of the Kings and the Nea Paphos mosaics on the 24th or the 26th, never the 25th; use the 25th for the harbour and coast. Add one village day by car only once its programme is confirmed, and keep the last day spare.
- 4 nights in Limassol. One base. Kourion and Kolossi Castle are listed open on the 24th and 26th, while the district museum and the castle museum are closed on both; spend the 25th on the seafront and the old town, and use any spare day for Lofou, 26 km away.
- 4 nights in Nicosia. At the top of the two to four nights our Nicosia page suggests. The Cyprus Museum is listed for 10:00 to 13:00 on the 24th and 26th, so put it first on one of those mornings and leave the afternoon, and the 25th, for the old streets and a long meal.
- 4 nights in the hills. Inside the two to five nights our Troodos page suggests. Walks and villages, with a car, and a spare day (below) in case the weather turns.
- 7 nights on one coast. Paphos or Limassol, both inside the three to seven nights their pages suggest. Hold the archaeology for the 24th and 26th, add a village day by car, and leave room for rain.
- 7 nights split, 4 plus 3. Four nights in Paphos or Limassol, then three in Troodos. Make the move on a day with nothing else booked: our Troodos page says buses reach the mountains from Limassol and Nicosia but not from Paphos, and that a car is often necessary. We have not confirmed the drive time, so check it before you promise a check-in hour.
Flying in, or already in Cyprus
Flying in from the UK. Visit Cyprus says the island has two airports, Larnaca and Paphos, and our Nicosia and Limassol pages name Larnaca as the gateway. Larnaca is the arrival point here, not a Christmas base, and the table above decides where you sleep whichever airport you land at. If you land at Larnaca, the official Lefkara page puts that village 43 km away, and our Larnaca page covers the promenade and the Salt Lake, where flamingos stay between November and March.
Already in Cyprus. No flight is involved, so the choice is the same table with a road journey in place of the flight. Visit Cyprus says the island has no train or underground, that buses link all the major towns, and that rural buses reach almost all villages but with limited frequency; our Troodos page adds that a car is often necessary there. Traffic drives on the left. The Cyprus departures hub covers trips that leave the island, and the Cyprus country page lists every base on it.
Practical notes
- Driving after dark. Visit Cyprus gives sunrise at about 6:45 and sunset at about 16:35 in mid-December, so a day out in the hills ends in the dark by late afternoon. Plan to be off mountain roads before then; our Troodos page says mountain roads need extra care and sometimes snow chains.
- Keep a spare day for mountain weather. Treat each hill day as movable. If rain or cold turns it, swap it with a coastal or city day, and use the closures table to see which days a museum can fill: the 24th and 26th for some, never the 25th.
- Restaurants. Visit Cyprus gives usual hours of 12:00 to 15:00 for lunch and dinner from 19:00 until late. We found no published source for restaurant availability on 24 to 26 December, so book the evenings that matter, and any holiday-menu meal at a village, before you travel.
- Shops. They must close by 18:00 on Christmas Eve, so buy anything you need for the 25th earlier in the day.
- Packing. Visit Cyprus suggests winter clothing for December and January and says heavy coats are not required; that is for the island generally, so in the hills, where its January figure is 3°C, add layers. A waterproof for the coast, and sturdy shoes for cobbled village streets such as those the Lofou page describes.
- No guarantees. This guide has not confirmed that any hotel, restaurant, village programme or attraction is open on 24 to 26 December, that snow will fall, that the sea is warm enough to swim, or what wildlife you will see.
