Which of these cities has a New Year's Eve, and which have only a date on the calendar

None of the eight cities above has an officially published programme for 31 December 2026 yet, as of this check on 25 September 2026. City halls typically confirm these in November, so nothing here is marked "confirmed" the way a market's opening hours can be. What does separate them is whether an official source shows an established, city-run public event most years, or nothing of the kind.

Every event above is free entertainment at a public square, checked against the organiser's own site or reporting on it. It's not a booked celebration, so check search nearer the date once city halls publish 2026-27 details.

Four picks with an established New Year's Eve, and not only a nonstop flight

These four nonstop cities have an official source showing a real, recurring public New Year's Eve. The other four in the table above are good city breaks over the date, just nothing organised for the night itself yet.

• Athens

  The shortest flight on this whole list, and the City of Athens has run a free concert-and-fireworks night at Syntagma Square each of the last several editions, with a drone show and silent fireworks over the Acropolis at midnight in the most recent one. The exact 2026 line-up is not out yet, but the square itself and the format are well established.

• Vienna

  Paphos, not Larnaca, is the nonstop option to Vienna. See the flight table above. The Wiener Silvesterpfad is the biggest event on this page: eight free stages from Rathausplatz to the Prater, running for over 24 hours into 1 January, in its 35th edition as of 2025/26. The 2026-27 programme is not published yet, but this is the most established New Year's Eve of anywhere on this list.

• Rome

  Roma Capitale itself describes its free concert at Circus Maximus as a fourth consecutive year running in 2025/26 — a properly established tradition. December here is also the mildest of the four picks, though also the wettest.

• Venice

  The Comune di Venezia runs a fireworks display over the Bacino di San Marco each New Year's Eve, reported as a roughly 20-minute show reflected across the lagoon in the most recent edition. Worth knowing before you book a hotel room facing the Piazza itself, since the fireworks aren't visible from there. The waterfront promenades toward the Arsenale are the better vantage point.

Good city breaks, just not a New Year's Eve to plan around

Prague is the case worth flagging specifically. Its Christmas market runs right through the New Year turn, and Old Town Square keeps a live seven-hour music programme on the night, but the historic centre has stood under a standing pyrotechnics ban since 2020, and there's no evidence of a city-run public fireworks display in any year checked. If a fireworks countdown is the point, this is the one nonstop city on the list to skip for it. Budapest, Belgrade and Thessaloniki are all perfectly good city breaks over 29 December-2 January. There's just nothing officially organised for the night itself to plan around, per the table above.

What a Cyprus New Year does not prepare you for

Larnaca's own December average daytime high is around 19°C. Every pick above sits deep in its own winter over the New Year turn. This is coat, hat and gloves territory for all four, not a heavier version of a Cyprus evening.

Booking over the turn of the year

• Cyprus's own fixed public holidays over the period are 25 and 26 December and 1 January, just three days off, not the full 29 December-2 January window, so most of this trip is built on annual leave rather than public holidays.
• Accommodation over New Year routinely carries a minimum-stay requirement and its own peak pricing, separate from the rest of December. Book the room before the flight if the dates are fixed.
• 1 January is a public holiday in every pick above: expect reduced opening hours for shops, museums and some transport, and plan the day around walking and viewpoints instead of a fixed itinerary.
