A complete Athens itinerary with the Riviera

5 Days in Athens

Athens plus the coast. Build a complete city break, then use the fifth day for a genuine change of pace by the coast instead of more central-Athens filler.

THE ROUTE LOGIC

Why this 5-day itinerary works

The first four days give ancient, modern and neighbourhood Athens separate space. The fifth day leaves the central grid entirely and budgets for the coastal transfer, so the Riviera is not misleadingly presented as a quick add-on.

What this guide does not try to do

The coast day needs favourable weather and at least half a day. If conditions are poor, use it as a flexible museum, food or repeat-neighbourhood day rather than forcing the excursion.

DAY 1

Acropolis, museum and Koukaki

The essential ancient cluster gets a proper morning without borrowing time from another part of the city.

AcropolisKoukaki7h 50m planned
6h visits20 min transfers1h 30m meals and rest
Acropolis

Acropolis and south slope

2h 30m visitStart here

Why here: A five-day trip can explore the slopes without turning the rest of the day into a race.

Keep it practical: Start early and shorten the exposed portion if heat or mobility makes the full route unwise.Adjust this stop in the calculator →
Koukaki

Acropolis Museum

2h visit10-minute downhill walk · 10 min counted

Why here: The museum completes the archaeological story while the route is still geographically compact.

Keep it practical: Take a real break rather than treating the café or rest time as failure to maximise the ticket.Adjust this stop in the calculator →
Koukaki

Koukaki evening

1h 30m visitShort local walk · 10 min counted

Why here: A calm first evening protects the next four days and helps the trip settle into a sustainable pace.

Keep it practical: Keep the exact plan flexible around arrival energy and dinner availability.Adjust this stop in the calculator →
The day total already includes 1h 30m for meals and rest. It does not assume hotel-to-first-stop or return-to-hotel travel.
DAY 2

Agora and the historic centre

Ancient civic life flows into markets, lunch and the streets north of Monastiraki.

Ancient AgoraPsyrri7h 20m planned
5h 15m visits20 min transfers1h 45m meals and rest
Monastiraki

Ancient Agora

2h visitStart here

Why here: It deserves more than the rushed add-on it becomes in shorter itineraries.

Keep it practical: Shorten the visit if day one already satisfied your appetite for archaeological detail.Adjust this stop in the calculator →
Monastiraki

Monastiraki and market streets

1h 15m visit10-minute walk · 10 min counted

Why here: The route stays coherent while the experience shifts from archaeology to the contemporary centre.

Keep it practical: Market conditions and opening patterns vary; browsing time is intentionally flexible.Adjust this stop in the calculator →
Historic centre

Central market edge and Psyrri

2h visit10-minute walk · 10 min counted

Why here: The long lunch and neighbourhood finish are the point of having five days.

Keep it practical: If the market is quiet, use the time for Psyrri and a less hurried meal.Adjust this stop in the calculator →
The day total already includes 1h 45m for meals and rest. It does not assume hotel-to-first-stop or return-to-hotel travel.
DAY 3

National museum and modern central Athens

A major collection, two contrasting districts and the option of a city-wide view.

National Archaeological Museum

2h 30m visitStart here

Why here: A dedicated block prevents the collection from competing with the Acropolis Museum.

Keep it practical: Choose a thematic route and stop while the objects still have impact.Adjust this stop in the calculator →
Central Athens

Exarcheia and Kolonaki

2h 30m visit15-minute transition · 15 min counted

Why here: Adjacent but contrasting areas show a broader version of central Athens.

Keep it practical: Pick one for deeper browsing rather than trying to cover both street by street.Adjust this stop in the calculator →
Kolonaki

Lycabettus viewpoint

1h 30m visit15-minute approach · 15 min counted

Why here: The clearest evening view belongs on a day that has not already spent hours outdoors.

Keep it practical: This is the easiest stop to move between days based on visibility and energy.Adjust this stop in the calculator →

DAY 4

Civic Athens and Pangrati

A lighter city day through green space, the stadium and a long neighbourhood afternoon.

SyntagmaPangrati6h 55m planned
4h 45m visits25 min transfers1h 45m meals and rest
Syntagma

National Garden

1h 15m visitStart here

Why here: The garden deliberately lowers the cultural intensity before the coastal day.

Keep it practical: Use it as shade and a transition rather than another sight to complete.Adjust this stop in the calculator →
Pangrati

Panathenaic Stadium

1h visit15-minute walk · 15 min counted

Why here: It anchors the route southeast and gives the day a recognisable landmark.

Keep it practical: An exterior view may be enough if the trip already contains many paid entries.Adjust this stop in the calculator →
Pangrati

Pangrati lunch and streets

2h 30m visit10-minute walk · 10 min counted

Why here: A long local afternoon creates a useful contrast with the historic-centre days.

Keep it practical: Leave the evening free rather than adding a cross-city dinner reservation.Adjust this stop in the calculator →

DAY 5

Athens Riviera without pretending it is next door

A movable coastal day with the outward and return journeys counted as part of the plan.

Travel to the coast

50 min visitStart with current transport information

Why here: Budgeting the transfer honestly prevents the half-day from becoming an overpacked city-and-beach hybrid.

Keep it practical: Check the official OASA network shortly before departure and choose the coastal stop around the service and weather that day.Adjust this stop in the calculator →
Athens Riviera

Coastal promenade and unstructured time

3h 30m visitLocal walk after arrival · 10 min counted

Why here: The day works because it has one purpose: a slower stretch outside the centre.

Keep it practical: Choose shade, swimming or a long lunch based on conditions; none should be presented as guaranteed.Adjust this stop in the calculator →
Central Athens

Return and free final evening

50 min visitReturn transfer

Why here: Coming back with no fixed attraction leaves room for delays and a favourite final dinner.

Keep it practical: Do not book a tight evening slot after a weather-dependent excursion.Adjust this stop in the calculator →
The day total already includes 1h 30m for meals and rest. It does not assume hotel-to-first-stop or return-to-hotel travel.
IF CONDITIONS CHANGE

Alternatives that preserve the trip

These swaps change the order or depth without pretending bad weather, heat or low energy can be solved by moving faster.

Poor coast weather

Use day five for a second museum, a long food-focused afternoon or a return to the neighbourhood you liked most.

Very hot city day

Promote the coast day if conditions are suitable and move the exposed archaeological day to a cooler forecast.

Need less travel

Replace the Riviera with the National Garden, stadium and a long Pangrati lunch.

WHERE TO STAY FOR THIS ROUTE

Choose the base that removes friction

Stay centrally for the whole trip unless the coast is the main purpose. Monastiraki or Koukaki minimises the cumulative city transfers; changing hotels for one coastal day usually costs more time than it saves.
