Areas of Hurghada

A few places people base themselves, and who each tends to suit.

  • Hurghada Town (El Dahar)Suited to travellers wanting a more local Egyptian feel and cheaper, non-resort accommodation compared with the hotel strips. Experience Egypt lists the traditional markets and the marina among the town's draws; staying in a resort area further out usually means a transfer into town, so ask the hotel what it arranges and what it charges.
  • El GounaMaster-planned lagoon town about 25 km up the coast from central Hurghada, for self-contained upscale stays with marinas, dining and activities inside the enclave. Treat it as a separate base from central Hurghada, with its own transfer from the airport and into town.
  • Sahl HasheeshQuiet, planned resort area for beach-focused stays with limited independent town life. Check the airport transfer time with the property before booking.
  • Makadi BayCluster of larger resorts south of Hurghada suited to package holidays and house-reef snorkelling. Check the airport transfer time with the property before booking.
  • Soma BayHeadland of resorts appealing to golfers and windsurfers wanting distance from the main Hurghada strip.

How these figures are worked out

Monthly averages — ERA5 reanalysis, 2022–2024, a three-year average, not a standard 30-year climate normal or a forecast. Gold months are the best weather fit: each month scores on how close its average daily high sits to about 27 °C, with heavy rainfall counting against it, and months far outside that range are not ranked at all.

How we work this out

What each season is like

Spring
March to May balances comfortable heat, good underwater visibility and fewer crowds than peak summer school holidays, making it popular with divers.
Summer
June to September brings the strongest sun and very warm sea; good for Red Sea-focused trips but can feel oppressive for non-divers and families.
Autumn
September to November often offers warm water, easing crowds and lower prices, though occasional khamsin winds and dust can affect comfort.
Winter
December to February is peak for European package holidays, so resorts can be busy even as inland Egypt cools; sea remains swimmable but days are shorter. Egypt's Coptic Christmas is on 7 January, a national holiday; a stay over 24–26 December falls before it.

Good to know about Hurghada

Why go

  • Year-round beach conditions and warm sea make winter sun easier than Mediterranean resorts closing for the season.
  • Many resorts sit on or near the reef, giving simpler snorkelling logistics than city-based bases like Cairo, though access differs by hotel.
  • Choice between self-contained enclaves such as El Gouna and quieter strips like Sahl Hasheesh or Makadi Bay.
  • Boats from Hurghada reach offshore islands and reefs such as Giftun, Abu Ramada and Magawish, weather and operator permitting. HEPCA, the local conservation association, grew out of divers installing mooring buoys so that boats would stop anchoring on the coral.
  • A five-night rhythm: arrive and settle, two beach or pool days, one boat outing if conditions allow, one day in town or at the marina, then depart. Seven nights adds a rest day and a second outing, each still depending on weather and the operator.

Worth knowing

  • Resort development has expanded rapidly and can feel overrun with tourists at times compared with quieter Red Sea towns.
  • Local non-resort infrastructure is patchy, so walking beyond hotel zones may feel unfinished versus more established Mediterranean cities.
  • Beach and reef access is concentrated around hotels, so independent travellers have fewer public options than in European resorts.
  • Reef and beach access differs by hotel: ask whether it has a sandy entry or a jetty, what board basis the price covers, whether the pool is heated in winter, what family facilities exist, and whether a festive meal on 24 or 31 December carries a supplement.
  • Boat trips to the islands depend on sea conditions and the operator, and are usually booked separately from the hotel. Keep a land alternative in mind, such as the markets and marina in town or a rest day at the resort.
  • Luxor and Cairo lie inland and away from the coast. Treat either as an optional separate leg, not an excursion: it needs its own transport booked, is costed separately from flights, stay and transfers, and wants a check of current routes and advisories first.
