A few places people base themselves, and who each tends to suit.
- East Bank (town centre)The practical base, with Luxor Temple, the corniche and most hotels and restaurants within walking distance.
- KarnakAt the northern end of the east bank, suited to visitors basing themselves near the largest temple complex rather than the central town.
- West BankA quieter, more agricultural side of the river, for travellers wanting to stay close to the Valley of the Kings and the mortuary temples rather than commute across daily.

What each season is like

- March and April warm quickly; sites are still manageable early in the day before the heat builds through the season.
- Summer
- June to August brings extreme, prolonged heat that makes midday sightseeing impractical rather than just uncomfortable; visitors who come anyway plan around dawn and dusk.
- Autumn
- October cools gradually from summer's peak, comparable to spring and a quieter alternative to the winter crowds.
- Winter
- November to February is Luxor's genuine high season: cool nights, warm and comfortable days, and the most practical months for a full day of sightseeing.

Good to know about Luxor
Why go
- Karnak and Luxor temples anchor the east bank, both open for evening visits when the heat has eased and the crowds have thinned.
- The Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple sit across the river on the west bank, reachable by bridge or a short boat crossing.
- Hot air balloon flights over the west bank at dawn are a long-running local tradition, launching before the day's heat builds.
Worth knowing
- Summer heat is severe rather than merely uncomfortable, with little shade at most sites; outdoor sightseeing in June to August is best limited to early morning.
- The east and west banks are split by the Nile, so every crossing is a boat or a road journey rather than a walk — worth planning into the day rather than assuming you can stroll between the two.
- Evening life outside the hotels is limited, with much of the town quiet after the main sites close.
