- Gamla StanThe medieval old town, best for visitors who want to be inside cobbled streets and close to the Royal Palace, at the cost of noise and narrow stairs in older buildings.
- SödermalmA hillside district of cafes and independent shops, suited to travellers who want a livelier, younger base a short walk or metro ride from the centre.
- ÖstermalmA quieter, upmarket area near museums and the harbour, good for travellers who prefer calmer streets and are comfortable with higher prices.
- NorrmalmThe central shopping and transport hub, practical for short stays built around trains and the airport bus rather than atmosphere.

- Long daylight hours and the fullest archipelago boat timetable make this the easiest season for combining the city with island time, alongside the busiest streets and highest prices.
- Autumn
- Cooler and quieter with shorter queues at museums, though outdoor archipelago time narrows as boat services thin out and daylight shortens fast.
- Winter
- Short days and cold temperatures shift the trip indoors, to museums and cafes; the old town's lighting and Christmas market add atmosphere but island trips become impractical for most visitors.
