Tallinn holidays

A compact, medieval walled old town on the Baltic coast, small enough to see without a packed schedule and close to an airport that adds almost no travel time to a short trip.

  • Old Town (Vanalinn)Best for first-time visitors who want the medieval streets, city walls and main sights within walking distance.
  • KalamajaA wooden-house district next to the Telliskivi creative quarter, suited to travellers who want cafes and independent shops over old-town crowds.
  • KadriorgA leafy, palace-and-parkland district suited to travellers who want a quieter, more residential base a short ride from the centre.
  • Rotermann QuarterA redeveloped former industrial block right beside the Old Town, suited to travellers who want modern restaurants and shops without leaving walking distance of the sights.

What each season is like

Spring
Snow clears and the old town becomes comfortable for walking again, though the sea keeps early spring cooler than the calendar suggests.
Summer
Long daylight hours and the warmest, most reliable weather for walking the old town and the coastal parks, and also the busiest season.
Autumn
Cooling quickly, with the old town noticeably quieter than summer.
Winter
Daylight is genuinely short and afternoons darken early, but the old town is small enough to see in full within the daylight available, so the season matters less here than in a larger city.

Good to know about Tallinn

Worth it for

The old town is one of the best-preserved medieval centres in northern Europe, walkable in full within a day or two.

Keep in mind

The old town is small, so a stay beyond three or four nights needs Kalamaja, Kadriorg or a day trip to stay interesting.

Why go

  • The old town is one of the best-preserved medieval centres in northern Europe, walkable in full within a day or two.
  • The airport sits close to the centre, so travel time on arrival and departure eats up very little of a short trip.
  • Kalamaja's wooden houses and the Telliskivi creative quarter sit just outside the old town walls, giving the city a contemporary side alongside the medieval one.

Worth knowing

  • The old town is small, so a stay beyond three or four nights needs Kalamaja, Kadriorg or a day trip to stay interesting.
  • Cobbled streets throughout the old town make it a harder choice for travellers with mobility needs or heavy luggage.
  • Winter daylight is short and cold can be sharp, narrowing comfortable outdoor time to the middle of the day.
