Cooling quickly, with the old town noticeably quieter than summer.

Daylight is genuinely short and afternoons darken early, but the old town is small enough to see in full within the daylight available, so the season matters less here than in a larger city.

Why go

  • The old town is one of the best-preserved medieval centres in northern Europe, walkable in full within a day or two.
  • The airport sits close to the centre, so travel time on arrival and departure eats up very little of a short trip.
  • Kalamaja's wooden houses and the Telliskivi creative quarter sit just outside the old town walls, giving the city a contemporary side alongside the medieval one.

Worth knowing

  • The old town is small, so a stay beyond three or four nights needs Kalamaja, Kadriorg or a day trip to stay interesting.
  • Cobbled streets throughout the old town make it a harder choice for travellers with mobility needs or heavy luggage.
  • Winter daylight is short and cold can be sharp, narrowing comfortable outdoor time to the middle of the day.
