Spring
March to May warms from around 6°C to 16°C as rainfall increases through the season — mild weather and fewer visitors make this a comfortable time to walk Baščaršija and the surrounding hills before summer's heat and crowds arrive.
Summer
June to August is warm, peaking around 23°C in July, and also the busiest season; rainfall eases notably after a wetter June, and the surrounding hills offer some relief from the valley's heat.
Autumn
September and October cool from around 17°C to 14°C and are comparatively dry, with good visibility over the valley making this a comfortable, less-crowded season — before November brings by far the heaviest rain of the year.
Winter
December to February is cold and often snowy, averaging 2–5°C, which suits travellers heading to the nearby mountains for skiing but shortens comfortable walking time in the old town; valley fog can also delay or cancel some early-morning winter flights.

Good to know about Sarajevo

Why go

  • Baščaršija's old bazaar streets, mosques and craft shops sit within easy walking distance of the newer 20th-century centre, so the city's different eras can be covered in one walk.
  • Surrounding hills and mountains give the city a dramatic setting and put hiking, and in winter skiing, within a short drive of the centre.
  • A layered history spanning Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and 1990s-conflict periods is visible in the streets and museums without needing to travel far between sites.
  • Jahorina, the 1984 Olympic ski mountain, lies about 28 km from the city by road through Pale and holds a long winter season, so a day in the snow is realistic from a city base.
  • The Tunnel of Hope was dug below the airport in 1993 to link the besieged city with free territory, and its Butmir end is now a memorial complex run by Memorial Centre Sarajevo; the city's tourism association gives the way there as a tram to Ilidža and a connecting bus.

Worth knowing

  • The city sits in a valley surrounded by hills, so smog and haze can build up over the centre during still winter weather.
  • Some buildings in the wider city still show damage from the 1990s conflict, which is worth knowing before arrival rather than encountering as a surprise.
  • Sites connected to the 1990s siege are found throughout the city and can make for a heavier, more sombre visit than a typical old-town break.
  • Winter fog in the valley can delay or cancel early-morning flights, so a tight same-day connection is a risk in that season.
