Updated 19 September 2026
February half-term is not one national week. England’s local authorities set their own school dates, and Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland run separate calendars again. Most English councils checked here land on the same week, but not all of them, so check your own school before booking. Below is how to choose between sun, a city and a short, colder winter break, with real flight times for each.
When February half-term falls in 2027
Three English councils checked directly land on the same week, Harrow, Sandwell and Wakefield all publish Monday 15 to Friday 19 February 2027. It is not universal even within England, though. East Riding of Yorkshire publishes the week before, Monday 8 to Friday 12 February 2027.
Scotland and Wales set entirely separate school calendars, and typically use a shorter mid-term break rather than a full week. Dundee City Council, for one, publishes Friday 12 to Monday 15 February 2027. Northern Ireland differs again and was not checked here.
This is what five official council pages said when checked on 19 September 2026. It is not a national rule, so check your own local authority or school directly before booking, especially if you are outside England or your council is not one of the four listed above.
Choosing sun
Mid-to-late February sits in the coldest stretch of the UK’s own winter-sun window, so the destinations that stay mildest matter more here than in November. See winter sun compared for the full climate comparison across five destinations. Tenerife stays warmest (low-to-mid 20s even in February) at the cost of the longest flight, Larnaca stays mild but has the broadest UK airport access, and the Algarve is the shortest flight but also the coolest of the group.
Tenerife
The warmest of the UK’s winter-sun options and the destination’s own content specifically names families wanting a resort stay as a good fit. The trip-length note here asks for five nights or more, which suits a full half-term week better than a long weekend does.

Larnaca
Mild in February, high teens by day, but we’ve seen nonstop fares to it from more UK airports than for any other winter-sun pick, and a promenade-and-old-town pace that suits a shorter stay than Tenerife’s own note asks for.
Recent nonstop fares from Heathrow and Gatwick
Faro
The shortest flight of the three, and the destination’s own note says two to three nights covers the old town and the barrier islands. A cheaper, shorter option than a full week away if half-term itself is tight.

Choosing a city
A city break in February is colder than the same trip in summer, but flights and rooms are typically less in demand outside the school holiday itself. Book for half-term specifically, since ordinary February pricing does not apply. See city breaks from the UK for the full ranked list.
Amsterdam
The shortest flight of this group, and compact enough that the destination’s own note says the historic core alone suits two to three nights, a realistic single half-term outing that doesn’t eat a travel day at either end.

Paris
A museum-heavy first-time-visitor city, per the destination’s own content. The density of sights makes a long weekend a practical minimum, so this suits a family with a fuller half-term week free, a proper stay instead of a short midweek dash.

Munich
The one city pick here whose own destination content specifically names families wanting calmer areas as a good fit. A dense historic centre plus easier access to countryside than Berlin, per the site’s own note, and a short enough flight to work as a long weekend if your half-term is tight.

Choosing something colder and different
For a trip built around winter itself rather than escaping it, Reykjavik is the one Capycation destination whose own content specifically names northern-lights viewing as a winter draw.
Reykjavik
A compact, colourful capital in its own right. The destination’s own content names northern-lights trips and Golden Circle or south-coast day tours as the reason people visit in winter specifically, one of the only picks here written around winter as the point of the trip.
Recent nonstop fares from Heathrow and Gatwick
February in Reykjavik averages close to freezing by day (monthly climate averages), noticeably wetter than the UK destinations above. Pack for proper winter, and check the destination page for what a Golden Circle day tour needs in terms of daylight hours this time of year.
Family practicalities
Half-term demand pushes prices up across all three shapes above relative to an ordinary February week. Booking earlier and, where your dates allow it, flying midweek instead of on the Saturday either side of half-term itself, both help more here than in a quieter month.
Every flight time above is the shortest nonstop time we’ve seen for that route, not a promise about your own dates or fare. For what getting to Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted or Manchester itself involves, see weekend city breaks from UK airports, which covers airport access in full instead of repeating it here. If you can wait for the school Easter holidays instead of February, spring sun 2027 compares March against April and covers destinations, like Cyprus and southern Spain, that are still cool or wet in February but warm by then.
