Monthly averages — ERA5 reanalysis, 2022–2024, a three-year average, not a standard 30-year climate normal or a forecast. Gold months are the best weather fit: each month scores on how close its average daily high sits to about 27 °C, with heavy rainfall counting against it, and months far outside that range are not ranked at all.
What each season is like
- Spring
- Comfortable for walking and ferry rides; popular with international visitors so central districts can still feel busy.
- Summer
- Hot and busy, with heavy traffic and crowded pedestrian areas; Bosphorus breeze helps, but midday exploring can be tiring.
- Autumn
- Often a good compromise, with lively streets and more manageable heat; rainier spells can affect Bosphorus views and outdoor plans.
- Winter
- Cooler and darker, with occasional snow or storms; crowds thin but some rooftop and terrace venues scale back operations.

- Offers a much larger scale and district variety than regional rivals like Athens or Izmir, letting you tailor your base.
- Historic peninsula around Sultanahmet and Fatih compresses major landmarks into a walkable area.
- European districts such as Beyoğlu and Beşiktaş give a different, more modern city feel than the Asian-side Kadıköy.

Worth knowing
- Traffic congestion is significant, so cross-city journeys can be slow at many times of day.
- City scale can feel overwhelming on short stays; choosing the wrong base district may add commute time to daily plans.
- Airports are far from central districts, so arrivals and departures often involve longer transfers than in smaller cities.
