Getting to Brasov

The airport is in Ghimbav, a short distance northwest of Brasov. RATBV's A1 express bus links the railway station to the terminal (via Camera de Comerț, Livada Poștei and Bartolomeu), timed around flight arrivals and departures between about 06:50 and 19:00, for a 4-lei fare valid 60 minutes; taxis are also available. A different, real number for a different city: if your flight lands in Bucharest instead, Henri Coandă Airport (OTP) is roughly 170km from Brasov, a road transfer rather than a short hop.

- One of the best periods to visit Romania, with pleasant conditions as highs climb from 9C in March to 18C in May and fewer crowds than summer, though May carries the heaviest rain of the year here.
- Summer
- Busier with regional tourism, suiting those who want livelier terrace life and longer days; June-August highs run 24-26C.
- Autumn
- Recommended for similar reasons to spring, with quieter trails and colourful hills as highs ease from 21C in September to 15C in October.
- Winter
- Suited to travellers combining Brasov with nearby ski areas, though town life is colder (highs around 4-6C) and more limited outdoors, with December through February also comparatively dry.

Good to know about Brasov
Why go
- Combines a compact medieval centre with easy access to castles and fortified villages in the surrounding region.
- Feels smaller and more walkable than Bucharest while still giving access to wider Transylvania.
- Works as a base for mixing town days with countryside or mountain excursions.
- Brasov's own airport already has a direct, year-round international route in operation via Wizz Air, though the site holds no fare or duration for that specific connection yet. The fastest journey this site holds priced data for runs via Bucharest's main airport instead.
- The castle day needs planning around opening days rather than distance. Peles, the royal summer palace at Sinaia on the main line south, is closed every Monday and Tuesday, and the museum also shuts it for occasional conservation periods that it announces on its visiting schedule. Visits are booked into a time slot, with tickets sold online or from payment machines beside the castles. Bran opens every day by contrast, though Mondays only from midday.
- Rasnov is the easiest of the three to reach under your own steam: the citadel sits above a small town on the Brasov-Zarnesti railway, a journey of about twenty minutes, and an inclined lift carries you up from the town to the gate if the walk does not appeal.
- Bran is a genuine Saxon frontier fortress, and worth seeing as one. The Dracula association is twentieth-century marketing layered onto Bram Stoker's fictional count — there is no record of Vlad the Impaler living there — so go for the castle rather than the legend and it repays the trip.
- Poiana Brasov, the mountain resort above the city, is a city bus ride rather than an expedition: RATBV's line 20 runs there from Livada Postei through the day, which makes it an easy afternoon in summer as well as a ski base in winter.
Worth knowing
- Smaller size means nightlife and dining are more limited than in Bucharest or Belgrade.
- Brasov's own airport (Ghimbav) opened in 2023, and Wizz Air announced in August 2026 that it will base an aircraft there from December 2026, adding four new routes (Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden, Chișinău, Barcelona and Madrid) to its existing network -- but it still handled only around 330,000 passengers in 2025, far fewer than Bucharest, so direct flight choice into Brasov itself stays limited and connections can be infrequent outside peak season.
- Weather can be changeable in shoulder seasons, so mountain excursions need flexibility.
- Romania is in the Schengen area, so UK passport holders can stay without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period; first entries now go through the EU's Entry/Exit System, which adds a biometric photo and fingerprint check for UK arrivals. The currency is the Romanian leu, not the euro.

- The Transfagarasan, the high mountain road often suggested from here, is shut for most of the year — it typically opens only from around the start of July until late October, and the exact dates move with the snow, so it is not an option on a spring or winter trip.
