- The city beaches sit out on the Ria Formosa barrier islands: Praia de Faro is linked to the mainland by road and served by local buses, while the quieter islands further out are reached only by ferry. Either way there is water and marshland between the old town and open sea, so a beach afternoon means a bus, a car or a boat rather than a walk.
- As a compact city, Faro offers fewer distinct neighbourhoods than Lisbon or Porto, which may limit repeat-visit variety.
