Getting to Skopje

Skopje International Airport is 21 km east of the city centre, at Petrovec. A scheduled airport bus runs into the centre — the airport names ErakTransporter as the operator and publishes it as a daytime service, roughly 08:00 to 20:00 — so an early or late flight means a taxi rather than the bus.

Spring
March to May warms from around 8°C to 18°C as rainfall picks up toward May, mild and comfortable for walking the riverside centre and Old Bazaar before summer heat sets in.
Summer
June to August is hot and increasingly dry, peaking around 26°C in July with under 20mm of rain in both July and August; temperatures regularly climb high in the city's valley setting, making the middle of the day uncomfortable for extended walking.
Autumn
September and October stay mild and comparatively dry, cooling from around 20°C to 15°C, before rainfall rises sharply in November.
Winter
December to February is cold, averaging 3–6°C, with the city's valley setting prone to holding haze and cold air over the centre for days at a time; February is the driest of the winter months.

Good to know about Skopje

Why go

  • The Old Bazaar and the riverside centre sit on opposite ends of the Stone Bridge, so the city's older and newer faces are only a short walk apart.
  • A dense cluster of statues, museums and government buildings along the Vardar river makes for an easy, flat walk through the modern centre.
  • It works as a low-cost stop for travellers exploring the wider Balkans, without needing much time set aside for the city itself.
  • Matka Canyon is the excursion that makes a stop here worth an extra day: a gorge and reservoir on the city's western edge, reached by public bus rather than needing a tour or a car, with boats running from the dam to a cave further up the water.
  • Mount Vodno and the Millennium Cross stand over the city. City bus route 25 runs from the Transport Centre to Sredno Vodno, where the cable car starts, and from there the cable car rises about 480 metres to the summit and the cross. It has had long interruptions to service, so check that it is running before planning around it: without it, the bus still gets you to Sredno Vodno, but the summit is a climb of roughly 480 metres on foot.
  • The centre's dense run of neoclassical facades and statues is recent and deliberate: the state-funded Skopje 2014 programme added dozens of buildings and well over a hundred monuments to a centre rebuilt in modernist style after the 1963 earthquake. It remains locally contested, and knowing that makes the walk between the Old Bazaar and the riverside legible rather than merely odd.

Worth knowing

  • Summer heat in the city's valley setting can make the middle of the day uncomfortable for sightseeing on foot.
  • The centre's cluster of statues and new buildings is relatively recent and divides opinion, so it may not match expectations of a more traditionally historic capital.
  • Beyond the Old Bazaar and riverside centre, sights are more spread out and depend more on taxis than walking.
  • The Memorial House of Mother Teresa closes on Mondays, which is easy to collide with on a two-night stay.
