Getting to Valletta

Malta International Airport connects to Valletta by the Airport Direct TD4 coach, which continues to the Gozo Fast Ferry terminal, and by taxi. Once you are in the city, ferries cross to Sliema and to Cospicua in the Three Cities year-round, running later into the evening from June to October than through the winter, and a lift carries you from the Grand Harbour waterfront up to the Upper Barrakka Gardens instead of the climb from the quay.

What each season is like
- Spring
- March to May warms from around 15°C to 20°C with low rainfall throughout, comfortable for walking, though cruise calls and weekend events can briefly swell crowds inside the small walled city.
- Summer
- June to August is hot, averaging 25–28°C, and by far Malta's driest stretch — July sees under 1mm of rain on average across the whole month. Streets and buses become busy and sun-exposed; some visitors prefer staying on the coast and visiting Valletta by day.
- Autumn
- September to November cools from around 26°C to 19°C as rainfall returns, a good compromise with fewer peak-season visitors yet most services still open; occasional storms can make the peninsula feel exposed.
- Winter
- December to February stays mild, averaging 14–16°C, with some outdoor seating and smaller operations scaling back — a quiet, atmospheric choice for an off-season urban break.

Good to know about Valletta
Why go
- More historic and small-scale than Sliema or St Julian's, suited to visitors wanting a walkable old city feel.
- The old city is a UNESCO World Heritage City, built within about fifteen years from 1566 by the Knights of St John and dense with baroque churches and palaces as a result.
- Central bus hub makes it a practical base for day trips to other parts of Malta and Gozo.
- Harbour views and peninsula layout offer a very different sense of place to inland or resort towns.
Worth knowing
- Valletta was laid out over a steep ridge, so many of the cross-streets running off Republic Street are long flights of stone steps rather than roads — awkward with wheeled luggage or limited mobility, and worth checking before booking somewhere off the main spine.
- Harbour-side city with limited immediate beach access compared with resort towns.
- Cruise ship days can make streets and viewpoints feel overcrowded for a few hours.
