Why go

  • The UNESCO-listed old town mixes baroque churches with narrow cobbled lanes and is small enough to walk in a day.
  • Užupis, the self-declared artists' district across the river, gives the city an offbeat streak most Baltic capitals do not have.
  • Countryside, including Trakai's island castle, lakes and forest, starts a short trip from the centre, so a city stay can include a day genuinely outdoors.

Worth knowing

  • The old town's charm is concentrated in a small area, so a stay longer than four or five nights needs a day trip or two to stay interesting.
  • Cobbled streets, steps and older buildings in the Old Town make it a harder choice for travellers with mobility needs or heavy luggage.
  • Nightlife and dining stay low-key outside a handful of streets, which suits a quiet trip better than one built around variety.
