Spring

Summer

Good to know about Catania

Why go

  • More urban and practical than Taormina's hillside resort feel, and on Trenitalia's regional line along the Ionian coast, so the rest of eastern Sicily is within reach without a car.
  • Seafront areas give direct access to the sea and lava-rock coastline rather than purely sandy resort beaches.
  • Close to Catania-Fontanarossa Airport, making arrivals and departures simpler than for some other Sicilian towns.
  • Flights here run in line with most western Mediterranean city breaks, so it isn't a longer trip to reach than mainland Italy or Spain.
  • Taormina works as a day trip by regional train, with one catch: its station, Taormina-Giardini, is below the town, and Trenitalia's own connection continues by bus from the station forecourt up to the centre.
  • On Mount Etna, the cable car from Rifugio Sapienza climbs from about 1,900 to 2,500 metres every day, weather and technical conditions permitting — worth confirming on the morning itself, because the mountain overrides the timetable.
  • Catania is one of the eight south-eastern Sicilian towns rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake that together form the UNESCO-listed Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto, which is why so much of the historic centre shares one period and style.

Worth knowing

  • Busy streets and traffic can feel intense, especially in summer.
  • Beach and seafront infrastructure is seasonal and may be limited outside peak months.
  • Some areas show wear and graffiti, which not all travellers appreciate.
  • Air traffic and road noise are noticeable in certain approaches and seafront zones.
  • Italy is in the Schengen area, so UK passport holders can stay without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period; first entries now go through the EU's Entry/Exit System, which adds a biometric photo and fingerprint check for UK arrivals.
