Spring
March to May warms quickly from around 6°C to 15°C, though this is also one of the wettest stretches of the year, especially May — a comfortable season for walking the old town before summer's heat builds, if you don't mind rain.
Summer
June to August is hot in the city with little shade through the old town's stone lanes, warming from 21°C to 25°C; June still carries real rainfall, but July and August turn dry, and the wine region nearby stays more comfortable than the city itself.
Autumn
September to November cools from around 19°C to 8°C and turns notably drier than spring, coinciding with the grape harvest in the wine region nearby — a strong season for food and wine.
Winter
December to February is cold, averaging 1–3°C, and the driest stretch of Tbilisi's year, with the old town far quieter.

Good to know about Tbilisi

Why go

  • A hillside old town mixes Persian, Ottoman and Art Nouveau influences within a few compact, walkable streets.
  • Sulfur bathhouses in Abanotubani are a genuine local tradition, not a tourist add-on.
  • Kakheti, Georgia's main wine-growing region, is close enough to visit without changing base: the national tourism board lists it at under two hours by road from Tbilisi.
  • Mtskheta, the old capital about 20 km from the city where the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers meet, is the nearest serious day out: Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, Samtavro Monastery and Jvari Monastery together make up a UNESCO World Heritage listing.
  • Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) and Gergeti Trinity Church are a much longer trip north — the tourism board lists close to three hours by road — over the high Georgian Military Road, where winter snow and avalanche risk can restrict traffic. That distance makes it a better overnight than a rushed return.

Worth knowing

  • Steep hills and uneven pavement through the old town make it a difficult base for travellers with mobility issues.
  • Tourist infrastructure is newer and less standardised than in Western Europe, so signage and service quality vary block to block.
  • The sulfur bathhouses and the cable car to Narikala can queue heavily at weekends, when the old town is busiest.
