Vaclav Havel Airport lies about 17 kilometres from Prague city centre. There is no direct train into the terminal: buses and trolleybuses feed into the metro network, and Airport Express buses run to the main train station, with taxis also available.

Spring
Popular for first-time visits, with cafe terraces opening and manageable crowds in both Old Town and castle districts.
Summer
Historic core becomes busy and warm, particularly around Charles Bridge and main squares, and some visitors find mid-afternoon walking tiring.
Autumn
Comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds suit mixed city and neighbourhood exploration, though short days later on compress sightseeing hours.
Winter
Christmas markets and lit streets make the centre atmospheric yet cold conditions and early darkness can limit time outdoors, especially in hill areas.

Why go

  • Combines a dense historic centre with multiple residential districts, making it easier to scale stays from two nights to a week than in smaller cities.
  • Offers more atmospheric river and hill districts than many flat Central European capitals, yet remains highly walkable.
  • Allows travellers to choose between Old Town proximity and lived-in areas like Vinohrady and Holešovice, something Salzburg or Zagreb provide less of.
  • Prague Castle's grounds are open from early morning until late evening all year, but its historical buildings, such as the Old Royal Palace, St George's Basilica and Golden Lane, keep shorter daytime hours that end earlier from November to March, and are entered on circuit tickets sold at the castle's information centres; St Vitus Cathedral opens only at midday on Sundays.
  • Kutná Hora, a separate silver-mining town, has its own UNESCO listing covering its historic centre, St Barbara's Church and the Cathedral of Our Lady at Sedlec. Its main railway station is about 4 km from the centre, with local public transport into town, and the smaller Kutná Hora město station is closer in.

Worth knowing

  • Old Town and Charles Bridge area can feel heavily crowded in peak season and during holidays.
  • Cobblestones and slopes in Mala Strana and castle approaches may challenge travellers with mobility issues.
  • Airport lacks a direct rail link, so transfers rely on buses, metro and road vehicles rather than a single train.
