Areas of Sofia
A few places people base themselves, and who each tends to suit.
- City centre (around Vitosha Boulevard)Best for first-time visitors who want the main squares, churches and shopping street within walking distance.
- LozenetsA residential district with a cafe and restaurant scene, suited to travellers who want a calmer base a short ride from the centre.
- OborishteA quieter, leafy area near the centre with grand old buildings, suited to travellers who prefer a residential feel over being in the busiest streets.
- MladostA larger, more modern residential district further from the centre, more practical than atmospheric and better suited to longer stays than a short visit.

What each season is like
- Spring
- Mild and increasingly green, a comfortable season for walking the centre before Vitosha's higher trails clear of snow.
- Summer
- Warm to hot in the city itself, while Vitosha mountain stays noticeably cooler, making it a common day escape from the heat.
- Autumn
- Cooling steadily, still comfortable for walking the centre.
- Winter
- Cold and often snowy, including in the city itself given its elevation, which is what makes Vitosha's ski slopes reachable so quickly but also narrows comfortable city walking time.
Good to know about Sofia
Worth it for
Vitosha mountain rises directly at the edge of the city, so hiking trails and, in winter, skiing are reachable without leaving the Sofia area.
Keep in mind
Some pavements and buildings in the centre show their age, and maintenance is inconsistent outside the main squares and boulevards.
Why go
- Vitosha mountain rises directly at the edge of the city, so hiking trails and, in winter, skiing are reachable without leaving the Sofia area.
- Roman, Ottoman and Orthodox layers of history sit within a few streets of each other in the centre, visible on a single walk rather than spread across the city.
- The centre is compact enough to cover on foot, with the metro available for anything further out.
Worth knowing
- Some pavements and buildings in the centre show their age, and maintenance is inconsistent outside the main squares and boulevards.
- The city is spread out beyond the compact centre, so reaching Vitosha's trailheads or outer districts needs the metro or a taxi rather than a walk.
- Winters are cold and often snowy, narrowing the comfortable walking season mainly to spring through autumn.
