Good to know about Yerevan

Why go

  • Yerevan's pink tuff-stone centre and wide Soviet-era boulevards sit below Mount Ararat, visible across the border on clear days.
  • Armenia's wine and brandy tradition runs deep, with tasting rooms and cellars throughout the centre.
  • Garni's Greco-Roman temple and the rock-cut Geghard Monastery sit in the same valley east of the city and make the classic day out. Public minibuses reach Garni, but Geghard lies further up the valley beyond it, so a taxi for that stretch or an organised trip is the usual way to see both.
  • Tatev Monastery and its Wings of Tatev cable car are in the far south of the country — an overnight or a very long excursion from Yerevan rather than a day trip — and the cable car does not run on Mondays unless a public holiday falls on one.

Worth knowing

  • The view of Mount Ararat that defines the city's postcards depends on clear weather and is often hazy or hidden.
  • English is less widely spoken than in Western Europe, and signage outside the centre leans on Armenian and Russian.
  • Evening life is concentrated in a small part of Kentron, so much of the rest of the city is quiet after dark.
  • Museum days need checking against the calendar: the Matenadaran manuscript museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays, and the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute on Mondays and a list of national holidays.
